Something to Talk About: Widen the goals?

The Article
  • Babcock wants wider nets just saying it makes sense because the goalies are bigger with their huge pads than back a couple of decades.
  • Ovechkin jokes "Yeah, let's play soccer"
  • Caps' goalies think everything is fine. Holtby makes the point that taller goalies give up bigger 5-hole gaps and such. They think goalies have just gotten better.
  • Barry Trotz, Capitals' coach, thinks sure the goalies are bigger, but on the other side shots are easily faster/harder than they were back then.
  • Caps' goalie coach wants to make the nets TALLER not wider.
My view is, first, the game is great. Why are we looking at fundamental changes? Second, Trotz makes the correct call. Third, the biggest difference to me is all the shot blocking. More rubber getting through on the goalies means more rebounds which will inevitably increase scoring. Fourth, making the goals taller, to me, is a bad idea. We don't need shots getting closer to guys' grills and chins. Truly, though, does the game need changes?
